Page properties

To edit the properties of a page, right-click the page in the left panel or your website's menu.

Include in menu

This item is checked by default, and the page or folder will appear in your website's menu.

If "Include in menu" is not checked the page will still be published, but the page or folder will not appear in the website's menu. This is useful for pages such as "terms & conditions" which often have a link in the footer, but do not need to appear in the menus.

Menu text

This is the text that goes into your website's menu. Make this short to keep your menus uncluttered, but don't make it too cryptic.

Search engine tip

iCode uses regular text links, which can be read by search engines. The text within links carries a high importance to search engines with regard to the target page. So try to include important keywords in the menu text.

Hover text

This is the text that pops up when you "hover" the mouse over the link text for a second or so. This can be a great help to your customers if it contains a brief description of the target page.

File name

This item is optional. By default, the file name will be the menu text with spaces replaced by hyphens and ending with ".htm".

Example:

Menu text: Contact Us
File name: www.yourdomain.co.uk/contact-us.htm

If you change the menu text you will therefore also change the file name. If a user clicks on a search engine entry to a page that has since changed it's file name, the user will get a "page not found" error.

For pages that are likely to be around for a while we recommend that you set a file name when you create the page.

Search engine tip

Search engines give a lot of weight to keywords found in the URL, including the file name. Use natural words in the file name that users may type into search engines. Separate the words with hyphens (not underscores).

Example:

Menu text: Jobs
File name: hotel-leisure-jobs-uk

Page title

This is the text that appears in the top left corner of your browser. It is also used to provide the text when a user adds your page to their "favourites". Remember, this is what your visitors will see when they find your website in their favourites, so give them a reason to come back!

Search engine tip

Search engines give a lot of weight to keywords found in the page title. So try to include keywords that are specific to the page.

Example page titles:

"Contact XYZ inc"
"Cheaper DVD's - choose a movie"

Meta tags

These are invisible to your visitors but can sometimes be useful to search engines.

Description

This meta tag is sometimes used by search engines to provide a short description of your web page in their search results. Make sure that the description says who you are, what you do, and why people should visit your site in a few well chosen words.

Example:

YouTube's meta description is: "YouTube is a place where you can discover, watch, upload and share videos."

Keywords

In theory the keywords contain a useful list of words relevant to the content of the page, but of course you can put anything you want in there and consequently search engines generally ignore it.
